As one of the most popular regions for holidaymakers to France, the Vendée on the West Coast offers some of the best golden sandy beaches in Europe. The geography of the area helps create a true micro climate phenomenon which means this region proudly boasts having the second most sunlight hours in France. Towards the Northern end of this stretch of coastline lies St.Jean de Monts, a busy and modern seaside town which offers bars, cafes, restaurants and a fast-paced nightlife. Top class water sports facilities also provide the option of an action filled holiday.
Travelling further South, resorts such as Talmont St.Hilaire and Jard-sur-Mer seem to run at a more sedate pace, although the impressive coastline features are still not far away. The cosmopolitan resort of Les Sables d’Olonne is world renowned as the start and finish of the Vendee Globe Challenge solo round the world yacht race.
For a change of scenery, why not head inland towards the Loire valley? Châteaux abound, giving a real taste of what life was like for the pre-revolution French kings. Amboise, Chambord and Chenonceau are all highly recommended. The local wines are not to be missed and are best sampled at source with a “dégustation”.
Futuroscope near Poitiers provides entertainment from a different period of history. As the name would suggest, this is a futuristic theme park providing quite a contrast to the neighbouring châteaux which are steeped in history. And Puy du Fou near Les Epesses successfully provides a combination of old and new with ancient spectacles recreated in the modern day. A cast of some 3000 locals provides a real time experience in “son et lumière” which is thoroughly recommended.
